Short Action vs. "Regular" Piston Valves

Hello, All;

Could someone please explain why "regular" stroke piston valves make an instrument acoustically better than the short action valves?
If the regular pistons make the instrument acoustically better, why do short action valves seem to be more desirable?

Also, why is a recording bell instrument less desirable than its upright bell counterpart?
