Who knows? The miracle of constant practice. It's proof that you're doing something right, I guess. I had a similar experience today in band practice... a piece required a pedal Bb, which I didn't think I could play on my CC...but I tried it and out it came!
Keep practising that low range...not just popping notes too, work on scales and melodies down the octave and hopefully you'll keep improving.
