Can you do a bang-up job on the John Williams "Concerto". That piece, now published, has become part of the mainstream repertoire. There are plenty of opportunities in this piece to show off virtuoso flexiblity, technique, endurance, and musicianship...or fall on one's face trying.

I've recently strolled anonymously down the practice room halls of two or three high-falutin' conservatories, have heard their tuba students playing through this piece, and recognized that they all had much work to do.

Again, if you can play this piece and can yank everything out of this piece that it offers, you'll find admission to a fine school. There are plenty of other ways to get in to a fine school, but "ace-ing" the John Williams would be a good one, provided the given conservatory had an opening.
