Straying off-topic here, onto well-treaded ground...

Is it really a good thing for so-called "classical music" to have that many recordings (and then some!) of one work?

One CD, maybe two for contrasts, is enough for me of any one piece. Jazz "standards" tend to be different, since the general rule of existence for jazz is to change things around and make new sounds. That doesn't work to the same degree with music where every sound is prescribed on a sheet. You almost never hear someone say, "Man, did you here so-and-so's rendition of Mercury? They took it about 40 clicks slower, and it was so cool!"

I've got my recording of The Planets. Now I know pretty much what it sounds like, and have ideas of what to do if I play it again myself. Time to look for new music.
