In my own practicing, I find myself getting aggressive and overplaying the excerpt. I have to focus my attention on restraint and efficient use of air and energy. The mouthpiece buzzing lets me know when to relax and when to hit the gas. Laying back tends to refer to style as when playing in the jazz or swing genre. Focusing on the back half of the beat reinforces the swing style and laying back toward that back half helps the groove. Just some self-observations.
