I am the only tuba player in an approximately 50 person community band. I usually use my Conn 97J 4/4 rotary valve horn (Cerveny 786 stencil) and it provides the right balance. The times I brought my Conn 21J, a 6/4 by anyone's definition, I had to lay back to make sure not to overwhelm the group. I think it was more a matter of breadth of sound rather than volume.

It would be interesting to see a 21/25J next to your YM. With that 24" upright bell it seems much larger than the M-W 2165. I know that my 21J dwarved my 97J. Unfortunately financial considerations forced me to sell it.
