The Columbus Symphony Orchestra's triumphant Carnegie Hall debut on April 18 was not the organization's only achievement last season.

At the orchestra's annual meeting Tuesday evening at the Adam's Mark Hotel, presided over by President and Executive Director Daniel Hart, leaders talked about a 50th-anniversary season full of good news:

:

* The sold-out Carnegie Hall debut, attended by 1,500 central Ohioans, earned positive reviews in the New York press.

* The annual budget was balanced for the fourth consecutive year.

* The orchestra cut its first recordings in 10 years.

* The number of season ticket holders rose to a seven-year high of 8,600.

* Total revenues rose 7 percent to $9.7 million in fiscal 2001 from $9.1 million in fiscal 2000; the annual budget this season is an unprecedented $10.3 million.

* The orchestra had an operating surplus of $100,000, part of which is helping to fund two new full-time orchestra positions.

* More money -- $4.9 million -- was raised in a single year than ever before: $3.5 million in the annual campaign and $1.4 million in the 50th-anniversary campaign.

* The endowment increased by $800,000, to $17.3 million.

* Expanded educational offerings reached 60,000 people in 30 counties.

Also honored at the annual meeting:

* Steven Secan, principal oboe, who won the George Hardesty Award for dedication and assistance to the institution.

* Zuheir Sofia, former board chairman and an honorary trustee for life, who won the Individual Advocate Award for support and leadership.

* Chemical Abstracts Service, which won the Corporate Advocate Award for working with the orchestra to present Picnic With the Pops.

* The McGraw-Hill Cos., which won the Battelle Award for donation of services to educational programming.
