I played one for a few minutes during my visit to Dillon Music several months ago. I found that it sounded like a large, German-style F tuba. I had a smooth, ethereal tone that floated out of the horn, with a lovely singing quality, as opposed to the "present" sound of my Yamaha that is more clear and less mysterious. But the low C was just as stuffy as on any other big rotary F I've played.

My impression was that it was a large F tuba, but I didn't think it played at all like a contrabass. The Willson is more like that.
