It was in the early 1960's. Martin came out with a fiberglass version of its smaller recording tuba. (My father was still using a 1927 brass version.) The Martin company went belly-up shortly thereafter. I didn't get to play on one until just a few years ago. A guy in Pennsylvania had one with a Conn upright bell grafted onto it. I liked the horn and offerred him a thousand for it but he would not sell it.
