The University of Florida is currently running a faculty search for a Professor of Tuba/Euphonium. Whoever wins the position will begin teaching in the Fall of 2002. This job opening has been listed in both the Chronicle of Higher Education and the Music Vacancy List, so it's not just a rumor. The closing date for applications is November 23rd.

They will probably appoint the new Professor by January or February. If I were you I would go ahead and apply and audition for the school, as well as for a couple of other schools. Don't wait until UF hires someone to apply, as faculty searches can take months and you don't want to miss the deadlines and scholarship money. Then stay in touch with UF to find out who the new teacher is, and if possible take a lesson or at least talk to this person on the phone once they are hired. You should also take a lesson or talk to the teacher at the other schools that you are considering. Then make your decision about which college to attend.

IMHO it's more important as an undergrad to study with someone who has strong pedagogical knowledge and is EXCITED about music and teaching. A strong performance resume doesn't always mean a good teacher, although it helps recruiting. Good luck in your search.
