Those who conquer the problem usually do so without even knowing why, to begin with. After thinking about it, here is what happened to me. I quit playing for someone else - the conductor, the wife, the kids, the audience -- and started playing just for ME. I'm really the only one who can truly appreciate the sounds coming out the bell anyway. On top of that, I quit trying to figure out "what" was happening and just tried to make music. In other words, I stopped being a technician and started being a musician. When I did that, the technique happened and I was a happier camper making far fewer mistakes than before. The nerves then took care of themselves - just disappeared.
