Dear Members of the Tuba-Playing Community,
As many of you are aware from the summer issue of the "TUBA Journal," October 12, 2001, is going to be a rather special day in the life of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The Arnold Jacobs Principal Tuba Chair, Endowed by Christine Querfeld will officially be inaugurated. Whether this event is one that you can attend or not, it is one in which you may nevertheless, participate either way. If you would like to write your own professional or personal thoughts regarding Arnold Jacobs and the naming of this chair in his honor, your words would be very appreciated not only by those of us in the Orchestra but by Ms. Querfeld who has endowed the chair.
Please mail or e-mail your words and thoughts to Ms. Michelle Miller at the CSO. They will be compiled and placed in a large display and eventually entered into a book which will remain in the CSO Archives. Be sure to attach your name to your remarks and indicate whether you are a student, professional, hobbyist, etc., and where you study, play or teach. [Please include that information as we want as much a cross-section of national and international connection to this event as possible.] Those who will be going through these mails probably are not acquainted with names that are of common knowlege to most tuba players, so please help out by identifying yourself and where you are from even if you feel your name should be readily recognized. Her e-mail address is mmiller(AT)cso.org ; Should you have any questions do not hesitate to contact her at 312-294-3111. Should you actually want to send a hard-copy letter, that would also be appreciated: Michelle Miller, c/o Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 220 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60604.
Should you actually be available to attend this reception, you would be very much welcome. The event will occur in the Grainger Ballroom starting approximately 3:30 - 3:45 PM following the afternoon CSO concert which begins at 1:30 PM. Members of the Orchestra are invited and many may be present. There will be a display put together by the CSO Archives chronicling the life of Mr. Jacobs plus remarks by Principal Horn, Dale Clevenger, who will speak of Arnold Jacobs as a colleague, teacher and friend. The lady who has very generously endowed the chair, Christine Querfeld will be present. There will be other presentations as well.
I thank you in advance for your time in contributing to this event either by your actual presence and/or in your own sharing of thoughts regarding Arnold Jacobs.

Best wishes,
Gene Pokorny
Principal Tuba, Chicago Symphony
