I would like to add my own perspective to this;
The pitch that you buzz IS the pitch that comes out of the horn. If you don't believe it, buzz a Bb (C...or whatever), and while buzzing, slide the mouthpiece into the receiver....VIOLA!
On the other hand, the pitch that you are buzzing with your lips, is only half of the equation, if the buzz does not match the open overtone series of the length of tubing, you will get a clam instead of a note. So, even if you are buzzing the correct pitch, you can be sabotaged by an out of tune tuba!
