I would have to disagree... the Ravel orchestration is hardly a show off to me. Ravel being one of the best orchestrators of romantic music, he put each picture to a different instrument(s) in the orchestra to create a different sound quality and different feeling and to things other than what could be played on the piano. If Ravel's "Pictures" is done correctly, it can be a total outflow of expression and passion, an experience which I have been very glad to have had. Hardly a flashy piece.
