Get a Conn 2 (or whatever they are called now). They are pretty good all around. A Conn Helleberg II 7B is a similar mouth piece but more expensive.

As for hand position, you should be comfortable, not cramped or allowed to tighten in to a fist or any other muscle intensive posture. You right hand should always remain on the valve levers/buttons. I always stop students from placing their left hands on the mouthpiece or lead pipe and encourage them to reach for a convenient brace or valve tube. If you hold by a brace, you are not stopping any vibration of a tube.
