I asked Gary Ofenloch that same question for an interview that will be coming up in a future TUBA Journal. His reply was simple...he told me to look at the old photos of the Boston Symphony Orchestra that were hanging on the walls (we were in the musician's lounge of Symphony Hall)...he then asked me to notice the audience. These people were mostly all "gray hairs", just like our modern-day audiences. His reasoning: people's tastes change with age. The audiences have been "old" for a long time and will probably continue to be. Great music will never die out. I say don't fret about it too much. But, of course, the more you can bring about awareness to people the better!
