I go to school in Montana and play in the local symphony. At least for us orchestra music is very much alive. The hall that we play in holds about 1,300 people, and we almost always sell out, if we don't sell out it is usually by less than ten people. It helps that most of the seats are taken up by subscription holders. As far as inviting people to the dress rehersal, we charge admission as well, the only place that doesn't fill up is the balcony. The suprising thing is that we do pretty heavy music as well, last month we played Mahler 4! I chalk alot of our success to a fantastic conductor/music director. As far as the senior citizen draw, most come to the dress rehersal, I guess because its cheaper and less crowded.
