First, think about (and possibly make a list of) the things which made your section leader nice. If you were willing to work hard for that person, that means that he/she was effective as a leader. If you learned from that person, that means that he/she was effective as a teacher. And, if you liked that person, that means that he/she was effective as a friend.

If you do those things, you will be good as well.

Second, High School (not just band) is a progression of events. No two years are alike. My son is a sophomore and it is very different from last year; not better, not worse, but different. The band director quit just before school started but last week his marching band won overall in a competition without a director. The kids stepped up to a new challenge and grew from it. They could have given up but that option was never mentioned.

Look forward to the next three years. Smiling makes a much better embrouchure.
