Well, here at UNCG, our solution to the problem was pretty simple...

We started listening from those descending 8th notes coming into the end of the piece. At the end of the descending 8ths section, we heard our "que" pause, and walked on to our auditorium's balcony. We let that secation go by until we hit the cut time...horns up on the fifth bar, and when we hit the ffff melody, not only was everyone on stage blowing to the best of thier ability, but those of us on the balcony (4 tubas, 1 euph [heh. poor guy.], and a whole bunch o' trombones) scared the crap out of the unobservant audience members, and also assisted the UNCG Wind Ensemble on stage in filling the hall with a ffff sound.

That's how we did it. :)
