Anyone else hip to this CD? I think it's a new release of some very early cuts ('71-'77) that sound very nice. Also, a very non-commercial CB disk; half of it is Baroque, with the last half more modern stuff. A couple of pieces with chorus, a few with organ, and one with orchestra. A couple of the modern numbers were of the "bleep-blop" atonal variety, if you're into that kind of thing. The one with the organ was especially nice, though. One interesting fact was, according to the liner notes, one of the original trumpeters, Bill Phillips, who stayed two years (replaced by Fred Mills), played the trumpet solo on the Beatles' "Penny Lane". The other trumpet, Stewart Laughton, 19, was replaced by Ronald Romm after one year ('71), when he enrolled at Curtis Inst. All four played on this CD, so it gives a good idea of the various flavors of the original quintet. Apparently, the original idea for the group came from Gene Watts (tbn) and Mills. BTW, to all of you keeping score with "Chuck's Horns"(a favorite topic of this forum), he's pictured on the cover with the others in the studio playing a Mirafone 184.
