Actually, Richard, I'm totally in your camp here! For some reason, DG made a number of Levine/CSO recordings that sound to my ears just the way you describe . Funny, because their CSO recordings with Barenboim, Abbado, and Giulini never quite sounded as harsh as these Levine ones. Even more odd, the Levine/CSO recordings that RCA made (Mahler 3, Brahms symphonies, etc.) sounded great since they were made in Medinah Temple. One big reason why I like this Maazel/Cleveland Prokofiev 5th is because of Decca's terrific late analog sound - nothing like it, except maybe some of their best digital sound. Again, Maazel/Cleveland did a great job on Romeo & Julliet, and Cinderella as well.
