I know that VMI is using a "gold" laquer on some of their horns and I know that yamaha used to in recent history. That is and indication to me that the stuff is still avaiable. I think the old King brass and Conn and York were of a slightly higher copper content also lending to a darker color. Remember that laquer is nothing more than a "clear" paint and can be colored slightly to your needs. Your best bet mat be getting in touch with a VMI distributor and see if at least the gold laquer that they make is available for sale. If the horn does have a certain sentamental value to it I recommend having it restored to exactly the way you want it since you aren't concerned about immediate resale value. It may turn out to play even better than you remember when the overhaul is complete.

Best of Luck,

Matt G.
