That kind of damage is not confined to Sousaphones! A couple of years ago during the nasty winter,I was walking with my tuba in a backpack type gig bag. Although the street was mostly clear, I hit a patch of ice as I stepped off a the curb. I fell forward and the gig bag came down bell first. Put a scrape on my knees and a wrinkle in the bell. I healed, the bell was ironed out, but was not 100%. Now I use a hard case with wheels. Don't suppose that would work in a marching band.
