If you don't use those ugly cheesecloth bell covers, you should consider getting the little grills Brasswind sells to put inside the throat below the bell joint. In my marching band days 1962-71, we had major problems with people tossing all sorts of things into the bells. We found all sorts of things in our sousaphones, from apple cores to used condoms, when we flushed them out. After that, we used bell covers or home-made grills to keep stuff out, and kept the horns in their cases in the band room.
