Gosh, I play both, John, and the bass viol is far more affected by the player than a tuba is. Two good tubists who sound the same on one tuba will sound pretty much the same on two different tubas, given that the tubas are similar beasties. But bass viol players bow and finger differently, even within the constraints of section bowing and their finger pressures are different as are their finger placements. There are so many more elements affecting a wooden bass than a metal tuba.

Can you bend a tuba sound and change it? Of course you can but not nearly so much as a bass viol.
