Hey Joe, I double on valve bone in the swing band I play with . Although they are not as popular these days, a lot of respected pros have played them throughout the years. It's tough to find a good one, they often sound stuffy and are difficult to play in tune, but if you get a good King horn and practice your Arban's and Rochut you'll be on the road to success!
Look on Ebay for a horn that works, play it for a while, and if you like it enough invest in a good new one. You could also try the highs schools in your area, there may be some old valvers hidden away in lockers somewhere that you could buy cheap. My school had three of them, and no one ever played them!
Good Luck
MF
