It doesn't take much to make those scratches. Lots of people just wipe silver polish right onto the dirty instrument. You really need to wash the dirt off first, so you don't grind it right into that beautiful finish. Then apply the polish with a CLEAN soft rag and buff with a different clean soft rag.

I've found that much in the way of tarnish and fingerprints will simply wash off if you use a mild cleaner like "Quick 'n ' Brite" (use a spray bottle filled with solution). Some people use Windex. Leave the polish for those rare occasions where you need a blinding shine.

Either that, or just don't sweat the small stuff (probably the best course of action).
