Hey Joe, if your bass has peizo-electric pick ups (most a/e basses do, they are either in or under the bridge saddle) try some black tape wound strings. this will give you a real nice dull and thuddy upright sound, but with nimble fingers and decent EQ you can still hear the articulation. If you are just crazy enough, pull the frets out, too!
