I use a portable Sony minidisc player and a sony stereo microphone for recording. The player retails for $350.00 and the microphone is $100.00. Any differences in recording quality from it and professional recordings are related mainly to the added doctoring that a professional studio, or company can do. The sampling rate according to the speciffications is 44 khz, the same as cd and DAT. I have very limited experiences with DAT recording (I have been recorded on DAT, but never done any recording with it), so I don't know prices. I am not saying that MD is better than DAT. For me, it was easier to get ,close enough to professional quality, and cheap enough (I'm a college student) to make it worth my time. Just my 2 cents worth.
