If you ever contemplate using your equipment to create a CD, then DAT is the only way to go. DAT uses a 44KHz sampling clock (the same as an audio CD). I believe that Minidisc uses 32Khz but am not sure; I do know that it's not the same as CD.

I use a Sony DAT Walkman, which is an amazinginly versatile little unit packed into a very small space. It set me back about $350 used. The fidelity is phenomenal.
