If trombones (in a sense, 1/4-size piccolo tubas, or piccolo slide cimbassos), trumpets (1/8-size double-piccolo tubas... heh...), and French horns (1/8-size ultra-narrow-bore combination F tuba/Bb euphonium with the bell pointing the wrong way) can be heard....

then ANYTHING can be heard. No matter how small it is.

It all depends on how you use it. ;-)

The only thing left, if necessary, is to find out which tuba produces the color of sound that's appropriate for the style being played. IMO, that's part of the conductor's job (we all know that that's why Donatelli/Jacobs's big York was built, remember?).
