I have a recording of New York doing that piece with Boulez. You can actually hear the note being played. Go figure. Novotny holds it over ever so little. Great tuba tricks to prove the note was actually there. BTW, before anyone jumps in, the piece was recorded in 1971, well before my favorite tuba player, Warren Deck, got there. Novotny was an incredible player too!!!!!
