It seems to me that the history of tuba pedagogy is divided in two by the largely soloistic approach of Bell and his students, and the orchestral thinking of Jacobs and his followers. Even though the two schools often overlapped in their teachings, it looks like those are the basic differences. And the horn choices that followed seemed, in general, to match those schools of thought.
