I just (possibly) thought up the ultimate test to discover whether, physically, this process has any validity: Take a junk trumpet bell section which has been removed from an old instrument. Squeeze the crook (bow, if you will) of the bell section together WITHOUT permanently bending it. Solder a crosspiece of some sort across the crook in order to hold it in that "stressed" position. Finally, run this bell section through the "deep freeze", unsolder the crossbrace, and observe whether the crook stays right where it is or whether it springs back to its original position. (????)
