I think that stories about how tubas collect strange things has been around for a long time, like urban legends, although I hadn't heard anything specific until reading this thread. A few years ago when I was demostrating the capabilities of the tuba in front of a group of people, I decided to work in some of this legend. When I picked up my tuba to blow on it, nothing happened (by design) so I reached down in and pulled out a brown bag lunch. When I tried again, still nothing. This time I turned it upside down and shook out a neff ball that was plugging it and I threw it out into the audience. The whole thing was just a harmless joke based on the fact that tubas DO tend to collect strange objects!
