Gene has several tubas at his disposal. When he is playing in the Chicago Symphony he usually plays one of the CSO York CC tubas. These two Yorks were owned by Arnold Jacobs, who played in the Chicago Symphony for over 40 years. There were only two of these large Yorks made to special order back in the 30s. They are particularly efficient instruments and have been copied by several prominent instrument makers, including Hirsbrunner, Walter Nirschl, and Holton. Gene owns one of the Hirsbrunner York copies as well as one of the Nirschl copies. He also owns a Hirsbrunner 4/4 rotary CC tuba which he played as his main orchestral tuba until he got the Hirsbrunner York copy in 1986, approx. He also owns a Miraphone 186 C tuba.

As far as I know Gene still plays a B&S Perantucci F tuba, He may have gotten some other F tuba by this time, but I know he has used the B&S F a fair amount.

Don't ever be afraid to ask a question on the Tubenet. You will learn a lot about tubas, and, sometimes unfortunately, certain "experts" who post here. All the best...
