If you think that the 4th valve on a compensating euphonium is just for playing Eb to Cb, I feel sorry for you. There are too many players out there that have no idea handy the 4th valve can be. There are many alternate valve positions using the 4th and other valves. It opens up many arpeggios that are almost impossible to play using either a 3 or 4 valve non-compensator. Also, when held down, it can be used in combinations to make easy work of rather tough runs.

A good place to start is to pick up “The Euphonium and 4-Valve Brasses” by Harold Brasch. Once you learn some of the tricks of the 4 valve compensator, you won’t play anything else.
