Hans Graf, formerly music director here in Calgary and currently music director for the Houston Symphony, was once in charge of the orchestra in Baghdad. He happens to be here this weekent, doing Petroucka, Tchaik Sleeping Beauty and Prokofiev Concerto for Piano left hand (Fiolkavskaya does it with her right hand due to an injury to her left). In a seminar, he mentioned the job in response to a question about how to get into the field as a conductor. It was a weak orchestra in weird conditions, but it was a place where he was in charge, therefore a better situation than being an assistant somewhere, where all you get is the hand-me-downs. He didn't mention the tubist.
Graf is a wonderful musician and a wonderful human. I hope Houston appreciates him, despite the negative things that have happened to them lately.
