Let's go with the sports angle-

I have a relative who is an avid participant and spectator when sports are involved, especially football, soccer and baseball. She also likes 'her' music, but couldn't carry a tune in a sack.

When invited to a concert, the response is always 'Are YOU performing?' and she will often attend in support. The second question is always 'What song is on the program?'. If she doesn't recognize the composer as exciting (Williams film-scores or a brisk Beethoven), then the next Q is 'How long is the program?' She suffered through a Mahler program years ago, and still cringes at the mention of that name! Luckily, there is a fancy movie theatre near the Symphony venue!

Is there a parallel between the subtleties of an hour(s)-long soccer match and an evening at the symphony? Can they BOTH be so wonderfully engaging and at the same time dreadfully boring? (There does seem to be a different level of side activities associated with each.)

Comments please...
