No no no no no no no no no no no etc.

The only time I'd use the BBb "conversion" slide is to practice marching band tunes that he must memorize for use on a BBb sousaphone.

The sound doesn't really suffer (I know there are all ways to 'prove' that it will--I've done it, it doesn't), but retention of the new fingerings will. Even now for me, two years after switching to CC, if I play my BBb Miraphone over a weekend, I have trouble the entire next week.

Use the longer fifth valve extension (the flat whole step) on the horn, and then he can use the fifth to tune funky notes like the low F, the Db (normally 2+4), and others.

I wouldn't call the BBb extender a 'crutch,' I'd call it a box. It's a habit that he should never even think of developing.

The tube is handy for experimenting, though. Try different combinations of tubing length and find the best 5th valve setup. The Getzen is probably the most versatile horn in this regard.

Hope I've helped,

Doug
