I always tell people if they are going to buy one tuba and use it for just about everything, a 4/4 sized tuba is the correct purpose, something like the Mirafone 186. This tuba is large enough for all, but the largest orchestras (10-12 celli, 7-9 basses) yet can still be played lightly enough for quintet solo and small ensemble stuff. Good luck!
