I think a combination of an essay review and a numerical score system (1-10?) would work well.
A review accompanied by scores in a variety of areas would give a well rounded opinion and readers can form their own opinions as to the validity of the review and scores (as said previously).
Others have reported that a simple scoring idea tends to invite mainly 10's or 1's. Unfortunately (I suppose) those who feel inclined to write a review and/or give scores to a horn will doubtless have fairly strong feelings about it.
Not many would bother to write a review about a horn they felt wasn't awful at anything but equally, didn;t excel at anything either.
Allowing scores in many areas (sound, response, intonation etc) enables reviewers to accurately score for "great sound, shame about the intonation".
