The two or so 2000's that I've played had easy-to-manage scales with far fewer pitches that were "miles away" from where I needed them to be.

This is admittedly my limited experience. The small ends of the tapers of the bugles of these two models are drastically different. (Look at the pictures. This is easy to see.) I don't think you're going to "tweak" a 2155 into a 2000.

I think it's quite clever indeed to continue to sell the two versions of the tuba - the first version and the improved version - at two price points, rather than saying, "Hey, we've made this model of tuba a lot better now." and simply selling it for the same price. They seem to be working the same marketing ploy with other models, such as the 2165/2265.
