Professional bassists, flutists, guitarists and lyrists and more have all done the suites-all within their respective ranges. To say it would be wrong for a flutist to play the suites in anything but the original octave would be silly. Why not simply say that it would be wrong to use any instrument but the baroque style cello the suites were written for to play them.

Keep in mind that playing the suites an octave down will definately change their sound; but know this does not necesarily mean in a bad way.

Good pro's will only knock you if you do it badly. So play in the octave that's most comfortable for you. Otherwise, join the history movement and play the suites like a museum piece, on a museum piece.
