Perhaps this is an excellent exercise to work on. Maybe I misread your original post, but you suggested using it as a means to evaluate a tubist in an audition.
I still believe that it is entirelly possible to have someone play that exercise well and still not be able to interpret the styles of Mahler, Wagner, and Strauss. I would suggest that this type of work you suggest be used to better the tubist in the practice room, but does little to evaluate the musician on the audition stage.
