I have personally experienced that of which you speak. Also, if I remember correctly, Tony Clements commented a ong while back that the back row played almost a half beat ahead so the orchestra sound would be homogeneous when it hit the audience. Maybe that was Jay Bertolet. I don't know about leading the beat, but some halls, it seems, require the back row to at least play on the front of the beat.
