I do agree that both types of valves will fail if the operator doesn't maintain the instrument properly.

I should have said that there are far fewer steps involved in the operation of piston valve versus rotors. Correct my if I'm wrong, but:

Rotary valves:

1. Push down on valve paddle.
2. Paddle mechanism pushes push rod.
3. Push rod rotates valve 90 degrees.

Piston valves:

1. Push down on valve button.

I guess you could say the operation of piston valves is less complex then the operation of rotary valves.
