I'm under the thinking that small mouthpieces are for people who are just starting. When I switched from trumpet in 6th grade, my first mouthpiece was a 24AW. A year later, I moved to a Bach 18, and then a few years later to a Helleberg, my current mouthpiece. The 24AW was just for starting out when my chops were used to a very small mouthpiece. Smaller ones are also better for smaller horns. So they aren't useless, but I think they have a more limited use than larger ones.
