Ditto me.

My first choice is a Yamaha 621 F tuba, which I bought primarily for playing in quintet and tuba quartet. It sounds like a tuba, but can blend with trombones. It also won't overpower the sorts of players who are willing to keep my company.

My teacher is a confirmed CC player in quintet, and thinks that F tuba there is blasphemous, though he solos on a Besson 983. His CC is a G-50. He plays with the big boys, however, and has to match their output.

I agree there are pieces where a bass trombone is more appropriate. I'm always uncomfortable hearing Gabrieli on a bloomy big CC tuba. The 621 is a flexible instrument that is a good compromise. Substitute a real bass trombone would require slide skills.
