That is a good idea, and likely the least expensive way to make it work right. Another option, if you want to dedicate a mouthpiece to only be used with that instrument, is to have the shank turned down to a cylinder (about .500"), then braze on a brass sleeve from large rod stock that has been bored to .500", then turn the new shank to fit the oversize receiver. I have done this to several mouthpieces, then buffed them and had them plated, and it is almost impossible to tell that the shank has been sleeved. One such mouthpiece was a Mt. Vernon Bach 18 that fit too far into a new King 2341, another was my personal Conn "Chief", which came to me in poor condition, and had a shank that someone had tried to turn down to fit into an Eb tuba.
I'm glad you found a good machinist - it is amazing, the fun you can have with a lathe!
